Organic Gardening:
What Family is that crop?
by Frann Leach
You can use this chart to find out what Family any fruit, vegetable or herb is in, whether for curiosity's sake or to help you in planning crop rotation schemes.
The family will give you some indication of the nutritional requirements, which you will need to modify by the type.
For example, Cruciferae contains both root crops (turnips, swede) and leaf crops (cabbage, Brussels sprout), as well as a number of plants often classified either as herbs or saladings (rocket, mustards). Each of these types within the Cruciferae family requires a different feeding regime, although for rotation purposes, it's important that you leave at least 2 years (and preferably 3) between Cruciferae crops planted in the same position. This is to avoid clubroot, which is very difficult to eradicate.
